Walking on Ellis today with a friend, and happened to notice the Tenderloin National Forest. I was taking a picture through the gate, when a van pulled up. This really cool guy gets out of the van and says “want to go in?”. So, we did.
Our guide told us that the forest is actually Cohen Alley (next to 509 Ellis, between Leavenworth and Hyde). The green space is cultivated and maintained by The Luggage Store. There are all kinds of interesting plants, and pieces of art in and around the garden. The building walls on either side of the alley have murals painted on them.
The space is open to the public Wednesday – Saturday, and I believe is open 10 – 5.
If you get the chance, you should check it out. Our guide (Jeff?) also told us that The Luggage Store is having an opening this Friday night, 5/9/08, 6-8pm.
