eatinintheloin, Farmerbrown

I finally had dinner at Farmerbrown, farm-fresh soul food — located at the intersection of Market, Turk and Mason Streets. Very close to First Step (T-shirts by local artists, sneaker art, anime (アニメ) toys!!!).

We went on a Saturday, during Memorial Day weekend. Even when most of The City’s population is up at Tahoe , I’d still recommend making a reservation — their site has an online system that makes it easy.

The online menu lists starters, entrees, desserts, and farm-fresh cocktails, so we went a bit early to sit at the bar.

Inside, the decor is cool, but not the typical SF cookie cutter restaurant interior (think Valencia St.). While we were sitting at the bar, a friend mentioned speakeasy — a good description. Harpo’s speakeasy, gone semi-chic (in a good, way). The bar tender was great, and the drinks were really good too — one had home made peach jam in it! Of course, I forget the name of it. My two cocktails (at the bar) were small, but mighty. Something with ginger in it. Or, I was sitting next to a woman named Ginger? At any rate…

Dinner was really delicious. I would recommend both the Crispy Cornmeal Catfish, and the Marin Sun Farms Braised Shortribs. Our waiter was attentive, but didn’t bug us. And, we weren’t held hostage waiting for our check (a pet peeve). My only complaint to our waiter was “look what you’ve done to us, we’re stuffed” — he came back with “you did that to yourself”. He’s right, we did. And we’d do it again…

The desserts looked good, but how in the hell do you save room for them?
