We just posted a news story a few days ago on the battle between public safety and public health in this whole city budget mess:

http://public-press.org/content/2009/07/01/conflicting-interests-city-unions-wage-lobbying-war-to-stem-cuts

We're planning on covering the hell out of this budget fiasco, and we can use all the help we can get.

(BTW, I really appreciate your blog. The Loin is horrendously under-covered in the mainstream media. We've added you to our RSS reader, I'm sure you don't mind...!)

The fire department in the neighborhood definitely gets to fires on time. Trouble is that most of the time they're out, it's not for a fire.

I've read figures that say that at least 70% (and possibly as high as high as 95%) of fire engine traffic in the neighborhood are for non-fire, i.e. medical and other responses, for example:

http://www.studycenter.org/test/cce/issues/49/49_neighbors_gain_ground.html

Try it some time - call 911, say you're short of breath and on the 6th floor of a Tenderloin SRO, and within 2 minutes you'll have 3 hook and ladder fire trucks with sirens blaring show up at the scene. It's out of hand.

Actually, I work for an advertising company on the tech side. I just suspected the worst in your intentions since that's usually what I've come to realize in SF. Every time I hear or read about someone preaching about "Saving" something in SF, it's a very thinly veiled cover up for their own self interests.

That said, we still have way too many fire stations and firefighters in SF. The fear of SF burning to the ground again due to fire is blown way out of proportion. Those fears are why we have too many firefighters. Cut the budget and leave it up to them as to whether they cut heads or salaries. I bet you dollars to cents that they cut heads instead.

BTW, we had firestations "brownouts" during 2002-2004 and we're still here. SF <3 FUD.

No, I work for a software company, and volunteer my time: planting trees, cleaning up District 6, helping children in the TL etc. -- logged approx. 150 hrs volunteering in the TL over the past year. I do think that the $190 million that SF spent on homeless services in FY 2008-09 is excessive. I am certainly pro public safety.

The BOS call to lever the playing field re: budget cuts is needed, but not in the area of public safety.

What do you do?

We have too much fire coverage as it is in SF. We could trim back and still provide a really good response time. Just because you had a first hand experience with the SFPD doesn't mean they should enjoy our unquestioning loyalty. They do a job, just like everyone else.

This is the second pro-public sector employee post you've run. Do you work for the city/state/government or something?

They could take pay cuts in lieu of layoffs. But no, no union would even consider that in a million years. They don't actually care about each other, they just want to squeeze every last red cent out of their employer.

Do you actually know how much police get paid in SF? It'll blow your mind.
